AVAAS bringsThe Connecting Communities Coalition SUMMER ALGEBRA INSTITUTE to Valley Students.   The Connecting Communities Coalition Summer Algebra Institute program is 3 years old.  It has been implemented throughout the state by community organizations funded by the Research & Policy Institute of California and the UCOP University-Community Engagement grant administered through the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.  For the last 2 years AVAAS had the ability to send students from the San Fernando Valley to programs provided by our collaborative partners; Young Black Scholars' program in Los Angeles or Council of African American Parents' program held at institutions in the Inland Empire. We invited students from the Valley, they did not attend.  This year AVAAS ask to host a program locally and funding was granted to AVAAS.

We recruited 2 great teachers who currently teach math at Birmingham High School.  There was a 2 day professional development provided and funded by the Connecting Communities Coalition at UCLA which teachers and staff attended.  The critical component of the program is the culturally relevant training.

The program provides students with 6 weeks of intensive instruction in Pre-Algebra.  Unlike typical Pre-Algebra classes however, the CCC SAIs allow students to focus on college preparation at least 20% of the time.  The CCC Summer Algebra Institute's unique culturally-relevant curriculum is also infused with African cultural themes to build the students' understanding of and appreciation for African and African American legacy in math.

Oakwood School in North Hollywood  donated the use of their lecture hall  to present the AVAAS Summer Algebra Institute.  Oakwood School is a beautiful campus, centrally located and easily accessible from the MTA Orange Line and the Metro Red Line.  Please view our flyer on the AVAAS SUMMER ALGEBRA INSTITUTE page of this site.  If you would like more information contact ; Gwen Gatson-Long, Site Director of the AVAAS Summer Algebra Institute at 818 621 7741 or 818 224 2134 ext 226.
